Coach holiday to Whitby
Dominated by the ruins of St Hildas Abbey high in Whitbys East Cliff, the town of Whitby nestles below to form a maze of alleyway and narrow streets running down to the busy quayside. Famous as the home of Captain Cook and where the graveyard at the parish church of St Mary, inspired Bram Stoker to include it in his novel Dracula.
Depart Lincolnshire for your journey to Robin Hoods Bay, with a comfort stop to be take in the historic city of York. Renowned for its exquisite architecture, tangle of quaint cobbled streets, iconic York Minster and wealth of visitor attractions, York is a flourishing city. Following your evening meal, festive entertainment will be provided in your hotel.
Enjoy some time at leisure in the neighbouring town of Scarborough. There is an abundance of cafes and restaurants where you can sit and observe the world of the seaside be it at work or play.
This morning enjoy carols and readings in the Good Hope Chapel, before a sherry reception is served in the hotel. A festive Christmas lunch is served followed by a visit from Santa! This afternoon is at leisure in Whitby. This is a lovely place. The little River Esk runs through a deep valley which broadens out as it comes near the harbour. The houses of the old town are all red-roofed and seem piled up one after the other anyhow. Right over the town is the ruin of the Abbey, a noble ruin of immense size. Between it and the town is another church, the Parish one, round which is a big graveyard, all full of tombstones. It descends so steeply over the harbour that part of the bank has fallen away, and some of the graves have been destroyed.
A half day scenic tour of the Moors is included, stopping in the village of Thirsk, known as Darrowby in the tv series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Spend your final afternoon at leisure in Whitby, before heading back to your hotel to take full advantage of the leisure facilities and festive atmosphere.
Following breakfast bid farewell to your hosts before heading back to Lincolnshire.
