Today we travel through the picturesque Mendip Hills to Cheddar Gorge, Cheddar has always been a very important, and a very special place. Its geology, prehistory, history and wildlife all have fascinating tales to tell. Even the Carboniferous limestone rock of the Gorge and its Caves has travelled the world. Formed under the sea on the Equator 300 million years ago from the remains of corals and sea creatures, it was moved to its present location by tremendous tectonic earth movements, then thrust up to form a range of mountains thousands of feet high. This afternoon there will be free time to spend exploring Wells, Wells is the smallest city in England with about 12,000 inhabitants. It can call itself a city because of the famous 13th century Cathedral. It remains remarkably unspoilt and has many other historic buildings including the moated Bishop's Palace, Vicars' Close, St Cuthbert's Church and a good local museum.
This morning we travel to the historic City of Bristol to visit the SS Great Britain, Brunel's SS Great Britain is one of the most important historic ships in the world. When she was launched in 1843 she was called 'the greatest experiment since the Creation'. By combining size, power and innovative technology, Brunel created a ship that changed history. His vision for the SS Great Britain made her the great-great-grandmother for all modern ships. The rest of the day will be at leisure in Bath, Independent, creative, unique and stylish, Bath is the only place in the UK where you can bathe in naturally hot spa water and original Roman Baths, making it the ultimate spa break destination for thousands of years.
After breakfast we travel to Weston Super Mare, The magnificent beach and seafront is just one of the many attractions of Weston-super-Mare, offering plenty of activities to keep you busy. You may fancy some watersports, a donkey ride, or a sedate stroll along the prom, or you may simply want to take a seat, stop, and enjoy the view with an ice cream and watch the world go by! A traditional seaside holiday resort, Weston-super-Mare offers everything one would expect from a holiday by the sea.
We depart the hotel for our return journey to Lincolnshire, with comfort stops enroute.
