Nostalgic Trails and Chilling Tales of Northumberland

Escape to Northumberland, one of the most picturesque areas of countryside in the whole of England including the most haunted castle in the country, a tranquil river cruise nearby majestic Durham, while we take in the region's unspoiled beauty on a full day coach guided tour of some of the region's hidden gems.

Monday

We travel to Northumberland with comfort stops on the way. When you arrive at the hotel you will be served a Danish and tea or coffee whilst your cases are taken to you room.

Tuesday

On your first morning, your specially appointed Blue Badge Guide greets you from the hotel and takes you on your coach guided tour beginning with a 1 mile causeway crossing to Holy Island, a 1000 acre unspoiled medieval island and the epicentre of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon times. (Dependent on weather conditions and tides). Abound with ancient ruins, walk to serene setting of Lindisfarne Priory where the marvellous 'Lindisfarne Gospels' were produced, which can be seen in the recently renovated museum nearby. After a hearty lunch (at guests' own cost) we proceed back to the mainland and arrive at the Heatherslaw Light Railway for a 20 minute single journey on "the most northerly steam railway in England" running along the banks of the River Till, giving you stunning views of the Northumberland countryside. Alight at Etal and proceed on the brief journey to peaceful Ford village, home to the Hudson Heritage "Best Hidden Gem" awarded Lady Waterford Hall. Built in 1860 and telling the fascinating story of Louisa Marchioness of Waterford, a famous beauty and friend of Queen Victoria who was tragically widowed at a young age. Prepare to be amazed by the life-sized watercolour murals that line the walls of the building, influenced by close friends like John Ruskin, one of Britain's greatest watercolour painters. There will be time for a coffee break in the Ford's tea rooms (at guest's own cost).

Wednesday

Set off aboard the Prince Bishop River Cruiser on the beautiful River Wear on a spectacular hour long scenic cruise that passes by a great many of the city's most celebrated sights from the unique perspective of aboard a handsome vessel on the charming River Wear. Enjoy the tranquillity of the river as you admire the wonderful views of the Castle and Cathedral above you and spot wildlife along the way past the city's bridges, castle and many of the Durham University buildings accompanied by a lively and informative guide commentary so you can get the most out of what there is to see. This afternoon there will be free time to explore the historic City of Durham.

Thursday

Stunning Chillingham Castle is a 13th century, Grade I listed stronghold in Northumberland and Britain's most haunted historic castle. Famed for its alarming dungeons and torture chamber in contrast with its fine rooms, gardens, lakes, fountains and tea rooms, the castle has an extraordinary ownership bloodline of the Earls Grey which runs back to the 1200s and is still home to Sir Humphry and the Hon. Lady Wakefield. The Castle has survived many sieges and hosted many kings from Henry III in 1255 and Edward I in 1298 to Edward, Prince of Wales in 1872 to members of the Royal Family today. Elsewhere on site you can visit the Chillingham Wild Cattle: the only surviving herd of purebreds in the world - so unusual, they're rarer than giant pandas!
Please note: As this is a 600 year old castle, this property is NOT suitable for people with mobility restrictions. There are also spiral stairs to negotiate around the whole estate with rope as rails (approx. 20-25 steps).
For those who cannot negotiate the castle we will travel via the lovely town of Alnwick, home of the Alnwick castle and many eclectic independent stores for you to enjoy.

Friday

Say a fond farewell to your hosts, your driver will arrange comfort stops on the way home.

Enjoy a walk in the sprawling grounds, clock a few laps in the leisure club's indoor pool or wind down in the sauna, steam room and spa bath. Linger with a coffee or snack in the comfortable bar, or sip a cool beer on the patio. The formal dining area serves English and Continental style buffet breakfast and bistro meals.
