Paignton the mayflower 400

Paignton the mayflower 400

An 8 day tour to the English riviera commemorating the Mayflower Pilgrims Mayflower 400

Book Now

Many of the Mayflower Pilgrims had roots in Lincolnshire and it seems fitting that this holiday departs from the area. More than 30 million people can trace their ancestry to the 102 passengers and approximately 30 crew who sailed on the Mayflower for a new life in the New World. In September of 1620 this group of people, who would become known as the Pilgrims, left their final stop in Plymouth to seek freedom to practice their religion and opportunity across the Atlantic on the Mayflower. In the process many believe they laid the foundations for modern America. This tour includes excursions that will explore this heritage and commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower.

One of the brightest jewels in the English Riviera's crown, as you arrive in the seaside resort of Paignton, you are met with the welcoming sight of its long stretch of beautiful and easily accessible beachfront, promenade, traditional pier, colourful beach huts and green. What's great about Paignton is that it is a compact resort, with the seafront and town centre shops all within close proximity, making it an ideal Devon holiday resort for that relaxing break away. Once you arrive, you don't have to go far, but of course, there is plenty to see and do in the area if you wish to get out and about and explore.

Dartmouth and the Mayflower story:-

Having set sail from Southampton, the Mayflower, with Pilgrims from the north of England, and Speedwell, carrying the Separatists from Lieden in Holland, didn't get very far before the Speedwell began to take on water again - either because she carried too much sail, straining her timbers, or the direct result of sabotage by the reluctant crew. The ships diverted to Dartmouth for repairs, arriving on 23 August 1620. According to passengers, the Speedwell was leaking like a sieve and required urgent attention. It took about a week for the port's skilled craftsmen to make good the damage before the ships headed out into the English Channel, North Atlantic bound.

An early departure from Lincolnshire begins your English Riviera experience. Travel to Paignton with comfort stops on the way. You should arrive with time to settle in before your evening meal.

The Queens Hotel, Paignton

The Queens Hotel was built originally as a row of small guesthouses on Queens Road.
