8 day holiday to Torquay

A traditional yet thriving seaside town set on Devon's English Riviera coast. If you haven't visited for a while, then banish those thoughts of a resort that has seen it's hey day.... the best is yet to come. With its iconic palm trees, busy harbour, international marina, sandy beach and wonderful array of continental style cafes, restaurants and cocktail bars, the scene is set for the perfect Devon seaside holiday or short break. This quintessential bucket and spade resort appeared in The Guardian in late 2016, being described as one of "Britain's most booming seaside towns, undergoing a style revival with Michelin starred restaurants and swanky yachts"! You only have to drive along the seafront or take a stroll along the promenade to know that this is true.

Travel South to Torquay, Your friendly driver will arrange comfort stops on the way.

Today is set aside for you to enjoy your resort. Torquay was a relatively minor settlement until the mid 19th Century when the railway linked it to the rest of the UK. The improved transport connections saw Torquay expand rapidly to cater for the area's popularity with the Victorian's desire to explore everything and everywhere, including the furthest flung corners of Britain. After the First World War the Great Western Railway Company extensively promoted Torquay, helping the town to become a major UK holiday resort.

After breakfast please join your driver for a trip into Exeter, Exeter has a real sense of individuality, its varied cultural scene is embraced by proud locals, and the diverse mix of eateries means it is renowned as one of the foodie capitals of the South West. Head to the West Quarter or the cobbled Gandy Street to discover great mix of independent shops and boutiques, cafes and bars.

Paignton is our destination for today. In Paignton you are met with the welcoming sight of its long stretch of beautiful and easily accessible beachfront, promenade, traditional pier, colourful beach huts and greenery. What's great about Paignton is that it is a compact resort, with the seafront and town centre shops all within close proximity, making it an ideal seaside town to visit.

Another free day in Torquay has been arranged for today.

After breakfast we travel to the House of Marbles, You can tour the site's historic trail with museums of glass, games, marbles, and Bovey Pottery as well as our listed kilns. Many of our visitors find they can while away an afternoon or two just browsing the gift shop, glassworks and taking refreshments in the licensed restaurant. Then this afternoon on to Buckfast Abbey, Benedictine spirituality at Buckfast Abbey is firmly rooted. It is not swept together from all sorts of spiritual traditions; it offers a measured approach, it does not make haste; it contains nothing mysterious or esoteric; it does not focus on the spiritual quest of any individual, but on the growth of the person living in a community - whether religious or secular.

With great memories of an amazing holiday we return to Lincolnshire. Your driver will ensure a comfort top is made on the way.

The Howden Court Hotel

The Howden Court is a family run hotel in the centre of Torquay. The hotel includes for a 3/4 acre garden with access onto the private pathway to Torquay seafront and Torquay Harbour. Many of the guests return year after year and sometimes visit several times in one year! The full programme of entertainment makes the bar a great fun place to be in the evenings and it's a nice way to meet new friends. Note that the hotel reception, bar, dining room, lounge and garden are all on the ground level - no steps.

A couple of matters to note: Firstly in regards to Star rating. About 10 years ago we came out of the Star rating system. We don't believe that it is an effective way of explaining to potential guests exactly what the hotel provides on a day-to-day basis. !6 years ago we were graded as a 2 Star hotel but that was when we first took over here at The Howden Court Hotel. The problem we have is that the Internet is such a massive thing, we have no way of removing the Star rating. Some operators take information from the internet when they advertise us in a brochure. This can be a disadvantage because some information will be incorrect. I am not sure if you are showing us as a '2 Star' hotel but if so can you remove such a statement and instead use TripAdvisor as a tool for guests to research honest opinions from guests that have stayed with us. For the past 7 years we have achieved the status of being in the top 10% of hotels in the U.K. For 2019 we won the accolade of being placed 16th in the small/medium hotel sector in the U.K. for 'Best Value' as judged by TripAdvisor.
