From the time of the Norman conquest in 1066 until 1971 the Dean was a Royal Forest. It was used by the Normans as their personal hunting ground and kept stocked with deer and wild boar. In addition the crown had the exclusive rights to timber and to the minerals. Although no longer a Royal Forest, the Dean is still largely in public ownership and is lovingly managed by the Forestry Commission.

Receive a grand welcome from our driver as you board the coach for our short break to the Wye Valley. There will be comfort stops on the way and when you arrive at the hotel you can enjoy a warm drink as your cases are being taken to your room.

After breakfast we take a mystery ride out on the coach. Your driver will take you to places of interest and this afternoon you will join the Dean Forest Railway. The 4 1/2 mile line runs through beautiful woodland and countryside offering visitors a chance to experience the relaxing pace of a typical country branch line. Whilst you relax and unwind they will serve a cream tea. Please be aware this may be either a diesel engine or a steam hauled train but cannot be confirmed till the day.

This morning we travel into Hereford. The magnificent Cathedral towers over the town. Take a moment to have a look at the stonemasons' work - the skill of these craftsmen is very evident. After exploring the cathedral make sure that you visit the Mappa Mundi, a thirteenth century map which shows Jerusalem as the centre of the world. Christopher de Hamel, a leading authority on medieval manuscripts said "... it is without parallel the most important and most celebrated medieval map in any form ..." . This afternoon we travel to Symonds Yat for a cruise. Leaping salmon, peregrine falcons and mink are all regularly sighted, although the local otters are a little more elusive! You will overlook the rapids where hillside streams babble into the river between mature woodlands of oak, ash, beech and cherry trees which are all set against the backdrop of views that extend over three counties. You will witness a hand crossing ferry taking passengers from either side of the River Wye as well as the rapids.

Relaxed we return you home to Lincolnshire with comfort stops on the way.
